Mount Vernonites: We Need YOU – Pledge Your Support!
Mount Vernon, Iowa is currently in the application process of becoming a Blue Zones Community. We have a very strong chance to proudly declare that we are a Blue Zones Community because we more than exceed the majority of the criteria already. One way in which you can help us to be even stronger in this process of winnowing the communities to the strongest is by pledging your support to the project.
Some people aren’t sure what becoming a Blue Zones Community is all about. I can completely understand that! Here is some information from the Blue Zones Project website:
| Changing Environments
Rather than asking people to increase their will power, the Blue Zones Community model works to improve environments. Little changes to your home, work, school, social, physical, and policy environments can make healthy choices the easy choices so that well-being improves naturally. Putting it all Together The Blue Zones Community model coordinates strong existing programs, brings in experts to inspire, train and provide innovative best practices, and ultimately organizes programs to provide greater options for physical, emotional, and social health. Read more about specific activities here. Ten communities that demonstrate the greatest passion, interest and ability to bring their community together will receive assistance from national experts to develop and implement a blueprint for making permanent environment, policy and social network changes that transition people into healthier behaviors. |
If you are interested in learning more about Mount Vernon’s progress in the Blue Zones Project, you are welcome to attend a meeting at 7 pm at City Hall. You can also ask me questions as I am the Community Engagement Director. Wow, what a lofty title. My job is to help you all understand what is going on!
As I said above, the biggest thing you can do right now is to pledge your support. Are you 13 or older and do you live, work, or go to school in Mount Vernon? Are you supportive of bringing experts in to talk with our existing employers, businesses, restaurants, grocery stores, parks departments, organizations, and other interested parties to help inspire, train, and organize simple efforts that require tiny changes to increase all our health? Please pledge your support.

Yes. In Albert Lea, Minnesota; and the cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach (also known as Beach Cities) in California. Albert Lea was the first proto-type community to embrace Blue Zones principles. In Albert Lea, Blue Zones worked with local government and community leaders for more than a year. Together they designed and implemented large and small-scale environmental and policy changes to encourage residents to adopt and maintain healthier lifestyles. Additionally, efforts were made to develop the social, commercial, communal, and professional networks needed to support these changes. This collective effort resulted in:
